Each plate has small male and female indents to "interlock" the plates together when stacked,  to prevent them from sliding around during use
Most weight stacks are 10 lb increments.  In many cases, this is too much of a jump for women, children, the elderly, or the rehab user.
With this two plate set you can take smaller increments of 2.5 lbs, 5 lbs,  and 7.5 lbs simply by adding these plates in 3 possible configurations.
Fine tune your regimen and maximize results.
Your strength is not gained in 10 lb increments so this is the answer.
Also, safer than dangerously hanging olympic plates on a weight stack using the selector pins.
