    Description

Long Bros. Fine and Rare Books in Seattle is pleased to offer a copy of Helix, Seattle's underground hippie rag, featuring a rear-cover concert ad for the Grateful Dead.
The venue for the concert was the Green Lake Aqua Theater (here, "Greenlake Aquatheatre"), a concrete stadium that stood at Seattle's Green Lake Park, the most-visited park in the Seattle Parks system. The concert was held on August 20, 1969, with opening acts New Riders of the Purple Sage and Sanpaku. Light show presented by Magic Theatre Lights.
The issue of Helix is Vol. 9 Number 3, published on August 14, 1969. Articles cover the increased use of police power in clamping down on politically active youth, the sentencing of MC5 manager (and White Panther Party founder) John Sinclair, who was sent up the river for 9-10 years for possession of two joints, a Lorenzo Milam opinion piece, pleasantly acerbic, and other timely subjects germane to the day.
The Dead played in the Seattle area the year before, when they showed up unannounced on the final day of the first Sky River Rock Festival and Lighter than Air Fair festival, Labor Day 1968, which took place in Sultan, Washington. That festival predated Woodstock by a full year, and is arguably credited as the first rock festival.
Condition is uniformly good other than the light stain in the upper corner of the cover that slightly bleeds through to versos (pages 2 and 29). Stain is more prominent on front cover than rear cover, where the Grateful Dead ad is printed.
Please note the writing at the bottom of the cover is actually printed. Although illegible, it appeared on all copies.
The Helix issue may be returned for any reason, with buyer paying return shipping, if mailed within one week of receipt. (This despite eBay’s stated “two week” return policy.) Any questions? Please holler! We pride ourselves on our customer service. Thank you for your interest. Happy bidding!
